As the industrial revolution transformed society in the 1800s with mass production leading the way forward scientist endeavorved to reproduce reality in a fixed format. in 1827 the scientist Joseph Niepce was successful in fixing the first projected image from his view out his window in the south of France. Louis Daguerre worked with Niepce in his quest to fix the projected images. Daguerre was a painter of stage sets and illusionistic scenery for the diorama.

Chapter 1
The first chapter of the book has already helped me find out what we do in the wider context of art in general. Clarke constantly reminds us that photography is art. he also believes there are 6 elements of a structure of a photograph. 1. Size 2. Shape 3. That a photograph is the miniaturisation of reality 4. It is 2 dimension 5. Time 6. As a an art form, photographs traditionally eschew colour |
PINHOLE CAMERA
The pin hole camera is probably the simplest camera you can imagine and is based on the camera obscura. In class you will be making a Pinhole Camera which you can use to capture a fixed image by using the darkroom to develop photographic paper. Therefore, we used a pringles can and lid, a roll of tin foil, black duck tape, and black card to line the inside incase of any reflection. These objects helped us create the perfect pinhole camera to help us capture these images.

This phototgraph looks very dramatic as the white and the grass is blowing in the wind and the house in the distance looks lonely almost as if it is abandoned. you can tell this photograph is taken with a pinhole camera from the black border around the photograph. this creates a more homemade look.
|
This is my favourite image from Caloz i i think the contrast between the building and the sky immediately draws the viewer in to looking at the smaller details in the picture such as the bike which has been made black to create more of a gloomy look. and the small lights in the back.
|
i really likes this image as although its simplistic the reflection of the houses on the water, makes the image look a lot more interesting. you can tell the colour of the houses are actually all different from the various shades of grey. i think this plays a huge role in the picture.

This is a great example of one of Kleins less in focus images. i like the way this photograph looks very chaotic as all the people are moving and seem to be very busy. i think the fact the picture is in black and white is creates more of a sinister and depressing view suggesting something negative or bad could have just occurred.
|
This is one of Kleins famous contact sheets, where he has obviously cut out a few particular images he liked the most and made them more abstracts and colourful as the film is in black and white. i think this explains his personality well as it shows he is more enthusiastic and enjoyed a bit of colour more than just black and white.

This image contains a juxtaposition between the man and the women. the fact the the women is so close up suggests that she is more important. she also seems much happier than the man in the background as he seems to be looking down of her almost as if he is jealous that she is getting more of the attention.
